Deeble Issues Brief No. 34: Can value-based health care support health equity?

Alison Verhoeven

This paper explores equity in the context of value-based health care strategies and health care reforms currently being implemented or considered in Australia. It draws on international experience and research and proposes matters for more detailed consideration by health policy makers as reforms are developed and implemented. It considers whether value-based health care strategies can strengthen health equity in Australia and reviews the tools available to policy makers to implement equity-focused health reform.

Recommendations are provided to support the achievement of greater public value for health investment as hospitals, health services and governments implement value-based health care reforms.
